Sustainability

The Orange Grove Residence is a rural tourism initiative in the heart of the Arade river basin
Our priority guideline was to explore Sustainable Tourism and preserve our farmland for future generations

ROSODA SA the owner of the property and owner of the Orange Grove Residence tourism initiative has been running the orange farm in its current legal form for more than 25 years. The farm and its activities are part of the local community and well-integrated into it and in the farm sector has been actively contributing to the local economy.

The tourism initiative was designed and newly built with sustainability as a core tenet

We are located at the very centre of our large orangery

The architecture of the building aims to cut down the impact of the sun in peak summer, whilst maximising its benefits in winter

The construction was executed securing best thermal and acoustic insulation, state of the art practice.

We put in place photovoltaic solar panels
We put in place water heating solar panels
We ruled out the use of fossil fuels and no fossil fuel is used in our tourism operation
We capture rainwater that fall in our roof top (500m2) and store it in an underground very large storage tank we use it as required in our garden

Our photovoltaic solar panels produce far more electricity than what we consume

The excess electricity is passed to the public grid

From day one all our lighting was 100% LED, hence economising electricity to the best practice today

Depending on patterns of consumption and production we had at times taken electricity from the public grid

The electricity taken from the grid is a very small part of our usage and in balance our solar panels provide far more than our total consumption

Around our newly built comfortable homes we planted a small garden around the homes and the swimming pools

This small garden is populated solely by local plants, and we pride ourselves in that it became a small heaven for bees and butterflies

We put to work a small sewage processing plant, which separates solids and liquids, and it yields clean water used in the farm

Our tourism offering evolved from our farming past and is well integrated into the local community.

We are in the Arade River valley, near Silves, the ancient Algarve capital, and in less than 30 minutes driving time we can:

1 Visit Silves, the castle, cathedral and other Silves’s attractions
2 Visit the best beaches in the Algarve
3 Visit the Arade River reservoir dam
4 We are near the departing point for 4-wheel drive mountain exploration
5 We are near Monchique and ideally located to visit Foia the highest peak in the Algarve
6 We are near sea excursions departing points (caves, dolphins, etc)
7 We are near the Sagres historic point, where the adventure to get the globe known and connected with Europe started
8 We are near the west facing coastline, the paradise for surfers, also where the nature reserve can be enjoyed
9 We are near half a dozen golf courses
10 We are near the departing of point many well documented and signalled mountain walking trails

We are part of the local community and we have been engaged with the local business and communities in the last 25 years and our rural tourism initiative enriched and enlarged the cooperation with the local community

Despite our very small size we impacted positively restaurants and other small local businesses.
